Their lone win was a 24-22 shocker over the Dallas Cowboys in week six.
The Jets have Adam Gase in his first season as not only coach but was an interim General Manager after Mike Maccagnan was fired in May, and before Joe Douglas was hired in June. New York signed LeVeon Bell to a massive contract in the offseason after Bell sat out the entire 2018 campaign in Pittsburgh. Through seven games Bell has amassed only 349 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Sam Darnold has been outduel by Baker Mayfield twice in his young career, but at least is 1-2 against Josh Allen and Buffalo. Those aren't exactly ringing endorsements for the guy most thought would be the top pick instead of Mayfield last year. Hell, Josh Rosen isn't even playing for the team that drafted him in the same group. Think about that for a moment that three of five quarterbacks taken in the first round of the 2018 Draft are now currently in the same division.
In Miami you know the tank is on. The Jets are just cannon fodder at this point. Teams are licking their chops to pad their stats when they see the Jets coming up on the schedule with the season now half over.
The Jets were thought to be sellers at last week's trade deadline, but did not move any parts that other teams showed serious interest in. There were calls from teams about Darnold's favorite target, receiver Robbie Anderson. Pittsburgh reportedly called about reacquiring Bell.
Then there was the saga of Quinnen Williams, the third overall pick from back in April. According to CBS Sports, one team offered a ransom of picks for the defensive tackle. You see trades of rookies on draft night, but to entertain it in the middle of their rookie season is practically unheard of.
The fact is that while the Dolphins and Bengals had worse records going into action in Week 9, the Jets are happy the NFL Draft is based on record rather than an NBA or NHL-style lottery. Very easily could the Jets end up with a bottom-three record when the regular season ends next month.
Even more embarrassing is the aspect that the New York Giants traded the best receiver in the game to Cleveland, along with a star defensive lineman, ran out a rookie quarterback, and they are light years ahead of the Jets in the rebuilding phase.
The hilarity is that the Jets get to play Washington next week, who despite only having one win as well, will likely be a favorite on the road. Then there is a rematch against Miami on 8 December that is being anticipated by absolutely no one with any vested interest in the 2019 season.
New York has eight players currently on injured reserve, including star receiver Quincy Enunwa. You could suit up any host of retired players from when Boomer Esiason, Neil O'Donnell or even Broadway Joe were playing and you may have a better argument for the Jets to cover the spread.
At the very least it will allow us to see Gase and his crazy eyes again.
Do we also really want to see them on primetime on 12 December against a Baltimore Raven team that should have a playoff berth in the AFC North locked up by then?
Anyone who thought Darnold getting mono earlier this year was the most embarrassing part of the Jets' season better strap in for the second half.
